On Tuesday, 12 February, Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft law, which will make amendments to the Immigration Law. The new framework will regulate how UK citizens and their families, legal residents of the Republic of Latvia until 29 March 2019, will be able to apply for further stay. Such changes are adopted as a consequence of the UK's withdrawal from the EU.

Cabinet has supported a legislative initiative regulating how UK nationals and their families, who are currently residing in Latvia, will be able to apply for new residency registration and documents. To extend their residency and continue enjoying  the same rights as before the UK's withdrawal from the European Union, UK citizens and their families will have to reapply for registration by the end of the transition period on 31 December 2020.

New framework offers a simplified administrative procedure for UK nationals and their families, who had lived in the Republic of Latvia until 29 March 2019. UK citizens will receive personal letters instructing them how to reapply for registration, what the deadline for re-registration is and what would be the consequences of failure to reapply.

There are an estimated 1,200 British nationals and their family members living in Latvia.
