State Chancellery
--

On Tuesday 10 July, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis will meet with Justin Trudeau, Prime Minister of Canada.

At a meeting with Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, it is planned to discuss opportunities for future cooperation between Latvia and Canada including economic cooperation. Preparations for the NATO Summit in Brussels and the European Union-Canada relations will also be addressed.

During the visit, the Prime Minister of Canada will meet with President Raimonds Vējonis and will visit the Canadian-led soldiers deployed with multinational NATO enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia.

The Prime Minister of Canada will pay a visit to Latvia before the NATO Summit in Brussels to be held on 11-12 July.

By implementing the decision taken at the NATO Summit in Warsaw in 2016 regarding the deployment of multinational battalion-size battle groups in the Baltic States and Poland, Canada makes an important contribution to strengthening Latvia's security.

The multinational battle group in Latvia is led by Canada, and it consists of more than 1,000 soldiers from Albania, the Czech Republic, Italy, Poland, Canada, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Spain, who fulfil their service duties in Latvia on rotational basis by participating in training with the National Armed Forces, thereby improving interoperability with regional Allies to be able to respond to the challenges in the security environment.

The goal of establishing and deploying NATO’s enhanced Forward Presence Battle Groups is to contribute to NATO's deterrence and strengthen the Alliance's defence by demonstrating the Alliance's solidarity and commitment to defending the Alliance against all forms of aggression. The solemn ceremony marking the arrival of NATO's enhanced Forward Presence Battle Group Latvia was held on 19 June 2017 at the Ādaži base.

The EU-Canada Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) opens up wider opportunities for cooperation with the Canadian business community. Following its temporary application, exports of Latvian food products are growing. The airline Air Baltic has purchased the latest generation CS 300 series aircraft from the Canadian company Bombardier.
