Prime Minister
Evikas Siliņas darba vizīte Lietuvā

Latvia and Lithuania currently cooperate even more closely than in the past, by implementing joint energy and transport infrastructure projects, as well as strengthening security in our region, emphasized the Prime Minister of Latvia Evika Siliņa during the meeting with the Prime Minister of the neighbouring country Ingrida Šimonytė in Lithuania.

Prime Minister E. Siliņa paid a working visit to Vilnius on 17 October.

“Lithuania is our major trading partner. We have much in common and very few differences in approaches towards addressing economic, energy and political issues,” E. Siliņa stressed during the meeting.

Prime Minister E. Siliņa pointed out that the construction of the railway line “Rail Baltica” in cooperation between the three Baltic States remains a high priority for Latvia. The project is important for the economies, security and military mobility of the Baltic States. The officials also discussed the disconnection of the Baltic States’ electricity grids from Russia and synchronisation with the European networks, scheduled by the Baltic States in February 2025, i.e. sooner than previously planned.

Latvia and Lithuania remain at the forefront of the most active supporters of Ukraine in its fight against Russia’s invasion and will continue to provide military, political, financial and other support to Ukraine for as long as necessary. Russia continues to pose the greatest hazard to Euro-Atlantic security, emphasised E. Siliņa.

The Prime Minister also expressed gratitude to Lithuania for supporting the State Border Guard of Latvia in relation to the hybrid attack by the Belarusian dictatorial regime on the eastern borders of the European Union in an effort to destabilise the region. The Heads of Government also discussed the development of the situation in the Middle East and future cooperation between Latvia and Lithuania, closely coordinating cooperation to enhance regional security.
