On Wednesday, August 27, Prime Minister Evika Siliņa, together with Latvian government ministers, took part in the joint session of the Latvian and Estonian governments in Tartu, Estonia. The meeting focused on discussing and aligning cooperation between the two countries in the fields of regional security, connectivity, economy, digital development, and skills enhancement.

“Estonia is the only country in the world with which Latvia is already holding its second joint government session. This is a strong affirmation to the quality of our cooperation. We are perceived as Baltic sisters, and together we can better defend our interests in the European Union, NATO, and globally,” said E. Siliņa at a joint press conference with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal following the first working sessions.

On matters of security and crisis management, the Latvian and Estonian governments discussed closer cooperation in strengthening collective defense, combating crime and Russia’s shadow fleet, ensuring secure fuel supplies, as well as tackling animal-borne infectious diseases.

“The geopolitical situation and the aggressive behavior of our neighbors demand that Latvia and Estonia act in unity. Our close cooperation is a guarantee of security for the people of both countries,” stated the Latvian Prime Minister.

Connectivity and infrastructure were also key topics for both governments. “Latvia is already actively working on the design of the Rail Baltica line in the direction of Estonia, with the goal of finishing construction by 2030. This project will only succeed if all three Baltic States move forward together.”

In the fields of economy and digital development, Latvian and Estonian officials discussed export and investment promotion, as well as the introduction of digital solutions. “Latvia and Estonia are among the most digitally advanced countries in the world. The use of artificial intelligence and the strengthening of cybersecurity are our new priority areas of cooperation,” said E. Siliņa.

This was the second joint session of the two governments, held this time at the invitation of Estonian Prime Minister K. Michal, further demonstrating the close cooperation, friendship, and unity of the neighboring states. “We share a common history, common interests, and also a common path to the future. The decisions made today will strengthen Latvian–Estonian cooperation and bring practical benefits to our citizens,” emphasized the Latvian Prime Minister.

At the conclusion of the visit, the Latvian and Estonian Ministries of Foreign Affairs will present the Language Award at Tartu Town Hall, underscoring the close cultural and linguistic ties between the two nations.
