Ukraine's resistance to Russia reflects western values

February 24, 2026 marks four years since Russia launched a full-scale war of aggression in Ukraine. Russia's actions are in direct violation of international law and order, and are condemned by the entire democratic world. Freedom and democracy are values that must be defended.

Latvia stands with Ukraine. We will keep supporting Ukraine's fight for independence and their land. Latvian society has continued to support Ukraine over the past four years. The results of a survey conducted in July 2025 show that 74% of Latvian residents want a just peace in Ukraine on the terms of the Ukrainian people.

In the four years since Russia's full-scale invasion, Latvia has provided more than €1 billion in aid to Ukraine. This includes €675 million in military support, €304 million to support Ukrainian civilians in Latvia, €92 million in humanitarian aid, and €17 million for the reconstruction of Ukraine.

In 2026, Latvia will continue to provide military assistance to Ukraine amounting to at least 0.25% of its gross domestic product (GDP). This will include Latvian military industry goods, contributions to the international Drone Coalition, training for Ukrainian soldiers, and contributions to international support initiatives. By working to ensure Ukraine's security, we are also working to ensure our own security, Latvia is a member of NATO and we are also proactively ensuring the defence of our territory.

Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa takes part in regular meetings of the leaders of the Coalition of the Willing countries. Together with international partners and the President of Ukraine, as well as representatives of the US President's administration she discusses military and political support for Ukraine, security guarantees, and a common approach to achieving a just and sustainable peace in Europe. The Coalition of the Willing brings together countries that are able and ready to contribute to supporting Ukraine.

Latvia stands in solidarity with Ukraine, remembering and honouring the Ukrainian people's sacrifices and resilience in the fight against the aggressor. On February 24, 2026, various support events will take place throughout the country. You can access the Program of events here.
