Latvian Prime Minister Evika Siliņa participated in the European Council meeting in Brussels in June 26-27, where European Union (EU) heads of state and government agreed to extend sectoral sanctions against Russia.

“Support for Ukraine remains vitally important. In the war initiated by the aggressor state Russia, Ukraine is defending not only its own freedom but also our security and shared values,” stated Prime Minister Siliņa. “It’s important to me that we are united in Europe and provide real support to Ukraine. We must clearly show Russia that the pressure will not ease until a just and lasting peace is achieved. The extension of sanctions against Russia demonstrates unwavering support for Ukraine.”

The decision by EU leaders ensures that a broad sanctions regime remains in force, including the freezing of Russian central bank assets valued at over 200 billion euros.

During the European Council meeting, the Prime Minister also highlighted the issue of EU external border security, emphasizing the need to strengthen the EU’s overall resilience against geopolitical threats and hybrid attacks. A joint letter, co-signed with the leaders of Estonia, Lithuania, and Poland, had previously been submitted, calling for concrete action in this area.

Discussions on the European Council agenda also included international developments, such as the situation in the Middle East, as well as strengthening EU defense capabilities, supporting Ukraine, migration policy, and promoting EU competitiveness and innovation. Prime Minister Siliņa underscored that investments in security and reducing bureaucracy enhance EU competitiveness and foster growth.

The European Council brings together the heads of state and government of all 27 EU member states, the President of the European Council, and the President of the European Commission. The meeting serves to make strategic decisions and define the main policy directions of the European Union.
