In light of the commitment of the Government to take immediate measures for strengthening the ability of Latvia to combat money laundering and the financing of terrorism, as well as to enhance the regulation for liquidation of credit institutions, the Ministry of Finance (MoF) has prepared the amendments to the Law On the Financial and Capital Market Commission (FCMC) and the Credit Institutions Law.

The Ministry of Finance has compiled proposals by all the institutions involved and, in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice and the Enterprise Register, will put forward amendments to the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorism Financing.

Following today's meeting of the Financial Sector Development Council, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš announced the decision to implement a substantial financial sector control reform and tasked the Ministers for Finance, Justice and the Interior with drawing up a legislative package by 26 March to be put to the Cabinet of Ministers.

The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland submitted its notification, under Article 50(2) of the Treaty on European Union, of the United Kingdom’s intention to withdraw from the European Union on 29 March 2017.

Today, on 12 February, Cabinet of Ministers  approved the draft law prepared by the Health Ministry, which makes amendments to the Healthcare Financing Law. The new framework will ensure UK citizens' access to publicly funded health care after the withdrawal of the UK from the European Union (EU), or the Brexit.

On Tuesday, 12 February, Cabinet of Ministers approved the draft law, which will make amendments to the Immigration Law. The new framework will regulate how UK citizens and their families, legal residents of the Republic of Latvia until 29 March 2019, will be able to apply for further stay. Such changes are adopted as a consequence of the UK's withdrawal from the EU.
