On Wednesday 16 May, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis participated in an informal European Council meeting in Sofia, where, together with the other EU Heads of State and Government, discussed the issues important for the EU - innovations, the US trade-restricting measures, as well as the US statement on withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and readiness to work with the EU partners on a new agreement to address the issues highlighted by the US under the JCPOA.

On Wednesday 9 May, the first meeting of the Cooperation Group of the Financial Sector, which was set up by Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, was held. The Head of Government, the Ministry of Finance and the Financial and Capital Market Commission informed representatives of commercial banks about an action plan for the adjustment of the financial sector, as well as on the steps already taken, including the alignment of legislation to ensure the transparency of the financial sector.

On Wednesday 2 May, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis met with Sultan bin Saeed Al Mansoori, Minister of Economy of the United Arab Emirates in Rīga.


The banks registered in Latvia will be banned from cooperating with shell companies and servicing their accounts, as provided for in the amendments to the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Terrorist Financing adopted by the Saeima on Thursday 26 April.

On Tuesday 17 April, the Commission for the Selection of the Head of the Office for Prevention of Laundering of Proceeds Derived from Criminal Activity has completed work on the evaluation of the candidates. The adoption of a decision - who will head the Control Service – falls within the competence of the Prosecutor General.

On Wednesday 4 April, during the meeting with the management of the Association of Latvian Commercial Banks (LKA) and heads of the largest banking groups, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis agreed on the establishment of the Advisory Group for Managing Change in the Financial Sector of Latvia and Coordinated Communication.

In the context of further implementation of the tasks delegated to the Ministry in the Action Plan of the Government, it is planned to introduce learning in grade 1 from the age of six from 1 September 2019 - as envisaged by the amendments to the Law on Education and Law on General Education prepared by the Ministry of Education and Science that were approved by the Government on 3 April 2018.

On 20 March, the Finance Sector Development Council has agreed to ban cooperation between banks and shell companies in Latvia, which have no real economic activity.

On 22 March, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis, together with 27 other EU Heads of State and Government in Brussels, discussed the attack of 4 March in the United Kingdom where the agent paralysing the nervous system was used. This issue was discussed within the framework of the European Council.
