When discussing the strategic objectives of the European Union (EU) for the next five years at the informal European Council meeting in Sibiu (Romania), Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš  stressed that climate change is one of the most pressing EU and global challenges. The countries alone are unable to meet this challenge. They must cooperate actively and take action.

Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš paid working visit to Minsk on 16 January. The Prime Minister met with President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko and Prime Minister Sergey Rumas within the framework of the visit. The officials discussed a number of issues relating to bilateral cooperation, including the promotion of economic cooperation in the fields of transport and logistics, environmental protection, as well as preparations for the upcoming visit of the President of Belarus to Latvia. Belarus's cooperation with the European Union and NATO was also discussed during the negotiations.

On 12-13 December, the leaders of the European Union (EU) member states met in Brussels to discuss the current issues such as climate policy objectives, the EU's multiannual budget for the next period, Brexit and foreign policy.

On 6 December, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš held a meeting with Prime Minister of Poland Mateusz Morawiecki. The officials discussed bilateral relations between the two countries, economic cooperation and regional cooperation in the field of security, as well as the implementation of infrastructure projects.

On 6 December, Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš discussed the way forward for the Rail Baltica project during a meeting with Prime Ministers of Lithuania and Estonia, as well as with representatives from Poland, Finland and the European Commission. The Prime Ministers of the Baltic States agreed to task the ministers for transport to propose a joint solution for an integrated project implementation model for Rail Baltica by February 2020.

On Friday 6 December, a meeting of the Baltic Council of Ministers will be held in the Office of the Cabinet of Ministers. Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš will meet with Prime Minister of Estonia Jüri Ratas, Prime Minister of Lithuania Saulius Skvernelis to discuss issues of importance to the Baltic region – regional infrastructure projects, including the Rail Baltica project, regional security and European Union issues. Mateusz Morawiecki, Head of the Polish Government, will attend the meeting as a guest of honour.

During the meeting held on Friday, November 29, Prime Minister of Latvia Krišjānis Kariņš and Prime Minister of Slovakia Peter Pellegrini discussed bilateral relations of the two countries, current agenda of the European Union, as well as security policy issues.
During the meeting, the Prime Minister expressed his appreciation for excellent bilateral relations. Latvia and Slovakia are like-minded countries and close cooperation partners in the European Union and NATO.
