The European Commission represents and upholds the interests of Europe as a whole. It is independent of national governments. Main tasks of the Commission are promotion of the European integration, development and implementation of policies, preparation of legal acts and supervision over the implementation of EU’s agreements, regulations, directives and decisions. The Commission manages the annual budget of the EU and represents the Union in negotiations with international organisations.
One of Commission’s principles, inter alia, is public involvement in its decision making. The Commission urges EU citizens to be active, express their views and take every opportunity to influence EU policies.
The Commission performs public consultations on the Internet site Your Voice in Europe, a web portal where everyone can submit his/her opinion on draft legislative acts, initiatives and draft policy documents, to share experience and practices, participate in discussions and find useful Internet links and information. For instance, the Commission received more than 6000 proposals and evaluations on the draft REACH Regulation.
The homepage of the Commission contains phone and e-mails of all the Commissioners and employees of the Commission. Everyone can contact the Commission in writing or by phone, to express his/her opinion, ask questions and receive written answers in two weeks’ time.
