In recent days, the words “rule of law” and “democracy” have been heard frequently. And I would like to take this opportunity to continue this discussion about rule of law and democracy in Latvia
Five years ago a new institution was established in Latvia – the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau which pursuant to the law is delegated quite broad authority in supervising state officials and controlling financing of the Latvian political parties.
It is my true pleasure to welcome all of you to Rīga. Your presence and participation at this conference shows the importance of the issues we are going to discuss today and tomorrow.
During the last years energy has been a widely discussed and considered topic. Energy has become an important issue in Europe, Asia, US as well as in Russia. Energy is modern topic.

First of all I would like to address the voters and thank them for the positive assessment received by the government in the Saeima elections, a government that has worked for almost two years. For the fact that our work has been noticed and for believing in stability and pragmatism!
Good evening! In Latvia, it is a tradition that on the New Year’s Eve, when the festivities have already started and there are only a few minutes left until the midnight, we get serious for a few moments and think about Latvia.
