Prime Minister met Lithuanian President Dalia Grybauskaitė |

Friday, on April 17, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Dalia Grybauskaitė, President of Lithuania. Latvia is the second country visited by the new Lithuanian President, and this was the first meeting of both officials.

The Prime Minister met the Director-General of the European Commission’s DG Regional Policy |

On Thursday, July 9, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Dirk Ahner, Director-General of the European Commission’s DG Regional Policy. During this meeting the sides discussed administration of the EU funds in Latvia and their re-allocation aimed at strengthening growth of the national economy.

Friday, on June 12, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, participated in the Baltic Economic Forum where representatives of the European Commission, the International Monetary Fund, the World Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, as well as of the largest Baltic companies and industries’ associations concern the solutions for dealing with economic crisis in the Baltic States and whole Europe.

High level working group discusses concrete solutions to stimulate economic activity in Latvia |

Thursday, the first sitting of the high level working group took place; the working group was created on the initiative of the Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis in order to discuss the short-, middle- and long-term development of Latvia, as well as to overcome the current economic situation in the country and to undertake a fundamental revision of the economic structure and competiveness.

Discussions about open and transparent activities of public administration take place |
 |
On Friday, May 15, in the closing discussion devoted to the structural reforms in public administration, officials and experts stressed that activities of state and local government authorities should be reflected in an open and transparent manner through publication of their budget reports, agreements and administrative expenditures. Availability of information and public control would prevent unjustified public expenditures and reduce bureaucracy apparatus.

Thursday, on May 7, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, during his working visit to the Czech Republic, participated in the inauguration summit of the Eastern Partnership. During this summit 27 Member States of the EU and 6 eastern neighbours – Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine signed a Declaration of the Eastern Partnership.

On Monday, May 11, during a working visit to Sweden, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Frederik Reinfeldt, Prime Minister of Sweden. After the meeting the Swedish Prime Minister emphasised that in the long term Latvia has very good prospects for the recover of its economy and for overcoming the crisis. Frederik Reinfeldt noted that Sweden follows the developments in Latvia with great interest and understands the complicated situation, as well as supports the measures undertaken by the Latvian Government in order to stabilise the economic situation. |

Wednesday, on April 29, during the meeting of Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, and Dr. Angela Merkel, Federal Chancellor of Germany, Angela Merkel showed deep interest in the situation and processes in Latvia – the social and structural reforms, unemployment, benefits and pensions and the respective proposals of the Latvian Government. Dr. Merkel expressed her position that it seems quite impossible that Latvia could fulfil the commitments undertaken under the agreement concluded with its international lender at the end of the previous year in view of the current economic situation when the recession amounts to 12% of the GDP compared to the recession of 5% as anticipated at the end of the previous year. |

The Prime Ministers of the Baltic States signed a Joint Declaration on the Formation of the Common Baltic Energy Market |

On April 27 the Prime Ministers of the three Baltic States met in Vilnius in order to participate in a broader discussion on the formation of the common Baltic energy market. In the end, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, Andrus Ansip, Prime Minister of the Republic of Estonia, and Andrius Kubilius, Prime Minister of the Republic of Lithuania, signed a Joint Declaration on the Principles for the Formation of the Common Baltic Energy Market and Actions for the Implementation of the Main Energy Projects.

The Prime Minister met the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus |

Today, on April 22, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Sergei Martynov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus. During the meeting both officials focused on the topical matters of bilateral economic cooperation in such areas as transport and logistics, energy, production and trade. Mr.Dombrovskis urged the Belarusian side to develop investments into Latvia and to work together on developing more active energy-related contacts of Latvia and Belarus. |

Japanese Ambassador who paid an introductory visit to the Latvian Prime Minister, is the first residing Ambassador of Japan to Latvia. During the meeting Mr.Dombrovskis expressed his acknowledgement for the development of relations between Latvia and Japan. The sides shared the view that it is necessary to promote political, economic and cultural dialogue and strengthen contacts among the people of both countries. In August this year a pilot project will be launched which envisages four charter flights of Japan’s tourists to Rīga, and a visit of Japanese entrepreneurs to Latvia is also planned. |

Latvian Youth form Shadow Government |

On Tuesday, April 14, a project called the „Youth Cabinet of Ministers” was launched. The ceremonial shadow Cabinet of Ministers meeting was chaired by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrivskis and a welcome address was given by President Valdis Zatlers. Young adults from Latvia will work as a shadow cabinet and regularly meet with respective line ministers to offer their recommendations for action to be taken concerning the economic situation in the country. |

Yesterday, on May 22, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, visited Prague, capital city of the Czech Republic. He participated in a multi-lateral meeting and a working dinner hosted by Mirek Topolanek, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, within the meeting of the European Nuclear Energy Forum taking place in Prague.
A meeting of the Czech Prime Minister and the Prime Minister of the three Baltic States took place in Prague, as well as another meeting with more participants, including the Heads of Government of the Vishegrad Group states, Prime Minister of the Republic of Slovenia and President of the European Commission José Manuel Durão Barroso. This was the first meeting at such level. |
