Prime Minister
--

On Thursday 15 September, Prime Minister Māris Kučinskis held a meeting with Markku Markkula, President of the European Committee of the Regions in Rīga.

During the meeting, Kučinskis pointed out the importance of innovation for his country's development, indicating that the Action Plan of the Government of Latvia anticipates six priority lines of action where a horizontal, tightly-coordinated cooperation between various line ministries is established under the guidance of one of the ministries and with a regular follow-up.

The Prime Minister also expressed his satisfaction with the cooperation between the largest of Latvia's universities and scientific institutions, which contributes to the nation’s development. The work of the University of Latvia and the Riga Technical University were mentioned as successful examples in this field.

Both sides agreed that regions and local governments play a key role in the economic development of countries. Another important issue is how to involve science in regional development.
