On Tuesday, June 5, Prime Minister V. Dombrovskis met Olli Rehn, EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs.
During the meeting the officials discussed current developments in the euro area and agenda of the EU summit to be held at the end of June. V.Dombrovskis informed that Latvia is ready to meet the Maastricht criteria to qualify for the euro introduction in 2014 and therefore expects consistent treatment from the European Commission and the European Central Bank regarding setting and application of the Maastricht criteria rates. O.Rehn confirmed that Latvia can count on such an approach and congratulated the Latvian representatives on successful conclusion of the international loan program which has enabled to lay a stable foundation for growth. O.Rehn pointed to the fact that this success imposes responsibility on Latvia to continue to pursue sustainable fiscal policy, moving towards reduction of the budget deficit.
