On Thursday, June 28, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis will leave for Brussels to discuss with the Heads of State and Government of the European Union (EU) countries the development of the EU and impact of the EU's multiannual budget for 2014-2020 on sustainable development.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister will highlight the priorities of Latvia in the development of the new EU budget, particularly the need to develop an adequate cohesion policy and to achieve a level-playing field for farmers, ensuring a fair direct payment system. The Prime Minister will highlight the priorities of Latvia also during the meeting with José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission.
An in-depth discussion of economic policy issues – growth, investments, employment and, for the first time at the level of the Heads of State and Government – the new EU's multiannual budget, will be held in the European Council.
During the meeting, it is planned to agree on growth-enhancing activities at both, national level of the Member States and at the EU level in the short and medium term. A special attention will be given to youth employment. The participants of the European Council will be invited to adopt the Pact for Growth and Employment in Europe.
Concluding the European semester, individual Member States will be given recommendations regarding structural reforms, employment policy and state budget. The interior policy and justice issues as well as current foreign policy issues are also on the agenda.
The Prime Minister will return to Latvia on June 29.

About the European Council:
The European Council was established in 1974 with the intention of establishing an informal forum of discussion between the Heads of State and Government of the EU countries. The European Council acquired official status in 1992 by the Treaty of Maastricht. Since then the European Council has been setting general political guidelines and priorities in all areas of activity of the EU. The European Council consists of the Heads of State or Government of the EU Member States, together with its President and the President of the Commission. It meets twice every six months and the meetings are convened by the President of the European Council.
