On Tuesday, July 24, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, will pay a visit to Prague, capital of the Czech Republic, in order to meet Petr Nečas, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Valdis Dombrovskis has also accepted an invitation to deliver a lecture on the importance of fiscal discipline for stability and development in Europe at the commencement ceremony of the American Institute on Political and Economic Systems (AIPES) and to also accept the Vašek and Anna Maria Polák visiting lecturer’s award of the Fund for American Studies.
Visit’s agenda: Tuesday, July 24, 4 p.m. The Prime Minister delivers a lecture at the commencement ceremony of the American Institute on Political and Economic Systems and accepts the Vašek and Anna Maria Polák award. Wednesday, July 25, 12:00, Valdis Dombrovskis meets Petr Nečas, Prime Minister of the Czech Republic. Valdis Dombrovskis and Petr Nečas will discuss the situation in the European Union and the results of the European Council meeting in June, Mr. Dombrovskis will also inform about Latvia’s priorities for the next EU financial planning period, invite the Czech Republic to support Latvia’s intention to join the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), as well as discuss bilateral relations of both countries.
In Prague Prime Minister Dombrovskis will give interviews to the Czech public radio Český Rozhlas, newspaper Mladá fronta DNES and to news broadcast of the television company Česká televize.
About the award: The award was established in 1995 in order to honour the leaders of Central and Eastern Europe for their contribution to region’s democracy and economic reforms. In 2000 it was awarded to Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, former State President of Latvia. Past recipients of the award include President of the Czech Republic Vaclav Klaus, President of Poland Lech Walensa, Prime Minister of Estonia Mart Laar, Prime Minister of Lithuania Valdas Adamkus, Prime Minister of Estonia Andrus Ansip, Prime Minister of Poland Donald Tusk, and others. Valdis Dombrovskis has been awarded for his achievement as the Head of the Latvian Government during the economic crisis.
The AIPES award is named after Vašek Polák who risked his life to save Charles Bridge from explosives the fleeing Nazis had set to blow at the end of World War II. In 1949, Polák was forced to make a daring escape to the United States where he became a successful entrepreneur. Following the Prague Spring of 1968, Polák finally returned in the Czech Republic. Through the Vašek and Anna Maria Polák Charitable Polák donated generously to education, the fight against breast cancer and to other purposes in the United States and the Czech Republic.
