On Wednesday, August 1, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, during the farewell visit of Juriaan Kraak, Ambassador of the Netherlands to the Republic of Latvia, acknowledged Ambassador’s contribution to strengthening bilateral relation and expressed his hope that the Netherlands would support the introduction of the euro in Latvia and Latvia’s accession to the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
When discussing the process of accession of new countries to this important forum for the development of the global economy the Latvian Prime Minister confirmed that Latvia is ready to join it in the near future. He emphasised that Latvia has developed an open economy and that it is also a country which has had outstanding achievements in overcoming the crisis and ensuring long-term development. Therefore the Prime Minister expressed his hope that the Netherlands would support Latvia’s accession.
The Prime Minister stressed that the Netherlands is an important partner of Latvia in several areas, for instance, exports of wood products, metal products and food. He also noted that the current dynamics of bilateral relations should be preserved. Valdis Dombrovskis explained Latvia’s interests regarding the EU 2014 to 2020 multi-year budget and expressed his hope that the Netherlands would support Latvia’s efforts to join the euro zone in 2014. The Ambassador recognised active bilateral cooperation and acknowledged Latvia’s support in implementing joint projects. The Ambassador also acknowledged the achievements of the Government and people of Latvia in overcoming the recent economic crisis.

Trade indicators of Latvia and the Netherlands: In 2011 the export volume to the Netherlands amounted to 179.20 million EUR which is by 31% more than in 2010. In 2011 the import volume from the Netherlands amounted to 338.89 million EUR which is by 23% more than in 2010. By total trade volume the Netherlands with 518.09 million EUR ranks as the 9th biggest Latvia’s foreign trade partner. Thus the total trade volume is by 104.38 million EUR or by 25% bigger than in 2010.
At the end of 2011 the positions of direct investments of the Netherlands in Latvia accounted for 530.6 million LVL. The biggest share of these investments was made in real estate, lease/rent, transport, storage and communications, as well as in wholesale and retail trade.
