On Wednesday, June 22, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis will leave for Brussels to participate in the European Council meeting, where the Heads of State and Government of the European Union (EU) will discuss the current developments regarding the economic policy and migration, as well as foreign policy issues.
On June 23, the Prime Minister will participate in the European People’s Party Summit and will chair discussions in the meeting of Prime Ministers of Nordic and Baltic countries (NB6) on the European Council agenda of June 24.
On Friday, June 24, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis will participate in the working session of the European Council, where the European semester will be concluded by assessing the commitments made by Member States in the National Reform Programmes and the Stability and Convergence Programmes. At the end of discussions, the European Council will endorse country-specific opinions and recommendations.
While discussing the current developments in the area of migration, the European Council will provide its opinion on the progress made in implementing the asylum and migration policy. There will also be discussions on external relations’ issues, including progress made by Croatia in negotiations on the accession to the EU.
On June 24, before the first working session of the European Council, at 9.00 (Brussels time), the presentation of the book “How Latvia Came Through Financial Crisis” by Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and economist Anders Åslund will be held.
The Prime Minister will return to Latvia on June 24.
The European Council was established in 1974 with the aim of establishing an informal discussion forum of the EU Heads of State and Government. The European Council acquired its official status in 1992 by the Maastricht Treaty. Since then, the European Council defines the general policy directions and priorities in all areas of the EU activity. The European Council involves the Heads of the State and Government of the EU Member States, its President and President of the Commission. It meets twice a year and the meetings are convened by the President of the European Council.
