The Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis has been granted the annual International Award by the Friedrich August von Hayek Stiftung for essential contribution to restoring financial and economic stability in Latvia.
The Chairman of the Board of Trustees and former President of Germany Roman Hercog and Chief Executive Officer of the foundation Lüder Gerken in their letter to V. Dombrovskis emphasize: “Latvia was vigorously shaken by the financial crisis; however, owing to your rigorous implementation of labour market reforms, Latvia has been saved from bankruptcy”.
The award will be presented to V. Dombrovskis at a ceremony to be held in Freiburg in the second half of this year. This is the first time when the Hayek foundation International Award will be granted to a representative of the Baltic countries. The foundation awards the international prize every two years. So far the laureates include Margaret Thatcher, Former Prime Minister of Great Britain, Václav Klaus, President of the Czech Republic, Leszek Balcerowicz, Former President of the National Bank of Poland.
F. Hayek (1899-1992) is one of most influential economists and social philosophers of the 20th century, who supported individual freedom and market economy. F. Hayek has done research in the London School of Economics, the University of Chicago, as well as the University of Freiburg.
