The Prime Minister calls for strengthening of economic relations between Latvia and Belarus

On Monday, August 23, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis and Sergei Martynov, Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belarus discussed the strengthening of economic relations between both countries within the framework of his working visit to Latvia.

Both officials acknowledged that the economic cooperation is the most important trend of the bilateral cooperation between Latvia and Belarus.

The Prime Minister mentioned that the established Intergovernmental Commission of both countries has demonstrated itself as an effective instrument at the government level to support business priorities.

The Minister for Foreign Affairs of Belarus expressed his hope that the two countries will strengthen the economic cooperation by developing a common manufacturing base for export to the third countries mentioning as an example the cooperation of the joint-stock company "AMO Plant" and "Minsk Tractor Plant" which supply the tractors for export to African countries, as well as the cooperation aimed at diversification of the routes for the supply of the natural gas.

Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis called for addressing several issues related to import restrictions of Belarus, thus intensifying the economic relations of both countries in the future.

Within the framework of the visit, both officials discussed the EU-Belarus relations. Prime Minister V.Dombrovskis recognized that the EU-Belarus relations have become closer and mentioned that Latvia will encourage the EU decisions promoting closer cooperation also in the future.

At the conclusion of the visit, Prime Minister V.Dombrovskis extended an invitation to S.Sidorsky, Prime Minister of Belarus to pay a working visit to Latvia in September and to participate in the Baltic Economic Forum. The Prime Minister also positively assessed the Agreement on Facilitated Travel for Borderland Residents that was signed today between both countries and that will facilitate border crossing for more than 200 borderland residents.
