On Tuesday, June 22, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis met Raul Chilachava Ambassador of Ukraine to Latvia during his farewell visit.
Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis expressed his gratitude to Ambassador Raul Chilachava for his personal contribution to promotion and strengthening of relations between Latvia and Ukraine and listened to the opinion of the Ambassador on the development of relations between both countries.
Prime Minister V.Dombrovskis noted that the existing bilateral relations between Latvia and Ukraine develop in a positive atmosphere. The relations with Ukraine is a priority of the foreign policy and the development co-operation policy of Latvia
During the meeting, the Head of the Government of Latvia and the Ambassador discussed the meeting of the 3rd Intergovernmental Commission that will be held on July 28-30, 2010 in Rīga and the Program for Cooperation between Latvia and Ukraine for 2010 – 2011 that will be signed during the meeting.
During the discussion, Prime Minister V.Dombrovskis emphasized that Latvia is ready to continue the cooperation with the Ministry of Defence and the Armed Forces of Ukraine within the framework of bilateral cooperation and the Nordic – Baltic Initiative for Regional Defence Cooperation.
The Prime Minister and the Ambassador also discussed the former negotiations between Ukraine and the EU on the Association Agreement. V.Dombrovskis noted that the conclusion of the agreement between the EU and Ukraine will promote and accelerate the implementation of reforms in the country, strengthen the relations between the EU and Ukraine and foster the political and economic cooperation.
During the discussion with the Ambassador Chilachava Prime Minister V.Dombrovskis emphasized that he regards Ukraine as an important and perspective partner for economic cooperation because there is a potential for development of economic cooperation if the national economies of both countries overcome the consequences caused by the global economic crisis and entrepreneurs look for new markets and cooperation partners.
