On Thursday, February 18, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Irena Degutiene, Speaker of the Seimas (Parliament) of the Republic of Lithuania, during her working visit to Latvia.
The officials discussed cooperation of Latvia and Lithuania in the area of energy, progressing of issues important for the Baltic States in the EU institutions, and the current economic situation in the Baltic States.
The Lithuanian Parliamentary Speaker informed about the progress concerning the project of the Visagina nuclear power plant. Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis acknowledged that construction of new power plants in the Baltic region would significantly contribute to region's energy security; therefore energy will remain one of the most important cooperation areas of the Baltic States.
Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis informed about the stabilisation process of the Latvian economy and decisions of the Government aimed at allocating financing from the EU Structural Funds for the development of export-oriented production.
At the end of the meeting the Latvian Prime Minister wished the Parliamentary Speaker of Lithuania success during her visit in Latvia and emphasised that Latvia is interested in further development of bilateral cooperation.
