In the morning of 18 June, in Brussels, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Prime Ministers of Nordic countries and the Baltic States. During the meeting, heads of governments, especially of the Swedish Government, expressed strong support to gain well-needed approval to amendments to the budget of Latvia in order to receive next payment of international loan.
Sweden’s Prime Minister Frederik Reinfeldt expressed firm support to current fiscal policy measures taken by the Latvian Government which are based on ensuring stability of the Latvian national currency (lats). He also added that currency’s stability has great significance in maintaining economic security and stability in Nordic countries and the Baltic region.
Today, Prime Minister Valdis Dombrovskis also met Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende who expressed his support to the Latvian economic reform process and budget cuts. In discussions about economic situation in Latvia, head of the Dutch Government expressed understanding about the support of the Latvian Government to the banking sector stabilisation, also adding that similar measures were taken by the Dutch Government.
In the course of the day, V.Dombrovskis will also meet leaders of other European countries in order to defend Latvia’s position and explain budgetary amendments and necessity to receive next part of the loan.
Today, at 6:00 p.m. Latvian time, the first working session of the European Council will begin; the second working session is scheduled tomorrow, 19 June, at 10:00 a.m.
