Tomorrow, in the evening of 17 June, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, will head to Brussels in order to participate in the meeting of the European Council which will be held on 18 and 19 June.

It is planned that the main discussion topic in the European Council will be the economic recovery and prevention of the financial crisis. For this matter, it is planned to assess the efficiency of current economic stabilisation measures, agree on further action for strengthening and controlling the financial sector, assess progress of work at the global level, in particular as regards the implementation of the outcome of the G20 London Summit.

The European Council will assess measures taken towards supporting economics and employment. The European Commission proposed to give Member States an opportunity to receive, by the end of 2010, 100% compensation for projects implemented within the framework of the European Social Fund. The minimum co-financing rate in the given period should be compensated with higher national co-financing rate for 2011–2013.

It is expected that the European Council will address the European Union position in relation to current international talks about global climate policy after 2012, the agreement on which will be made in the Copenhagen Conference in December.

The agenda of the meeting also includes issues concerning the further progress towards ratification of the Lisbon Treaty and the current European Union institutional matters, the Baltic Sea region strategy, as well as external relations.
