Tomorrow, in the evening of 17 June, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, will participate in working dinner organised for heads of governments of the Baltic Sea region countries and hosted by José Manuel Barroso, President of the European Commission. During the dinner, the parties will discuss security issues in the Baltic region, and plan to approve the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP).
Since fall of the last year, the European Commission has headed a high-level working group on the Baltic energy market and interconnections; in the framework of the working group an agreement was reached on a concrete working program and projects in this area. During the dinner hosted by Barroso, particular attention will be paid to further progress necessary for developing regional gas and electricity market.
It is planned that a memorandum of understanding on the Baltic energy market plan will be signed during the dinner. The participants and signatories of the memorandum will be the European Commission, and head of governments of Denmark, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Finland, Germany and Sweden.
The Latvian party highly commends the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan and believes that it is an important stimulus for integration of the Scandinavian and Baltic energy market. It is planned that this plan will be a part of the European Union Strategy for the Baltic Sea and will be also mentioned in conclusions of the European Council of June.
