Today, on April 22, Valdis Dombrovskis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Sergei Martynov, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Belarus. During the meeting both officials focused on the topical matters of bilateral economic cooperation in such areas as transport and logistics, energy, production and trade. Mr.Dombrovskis urged the Belarusian side to develop investments into Latvia and to work together on developing more active energy-related contacts of Latvia and Belarus.
The sides admitted that it is important to develop bilateral cooperation of Latvia and Belarus and to continue activities of the Intergovernmental Committee by including the topical cooperation issues in its agenda.
When addressing economic cooperation, Mr.Dombrovskis expressed Latvia’s interest in increasing the amount of air flights between Latvia and Belarus. The officials also addressed the necessity to strengthen cooperation in the area of transit cargo transportation by involving Asian countries. Mr.Dombrovskis expressed his position that it is essential to continue the current projects and to develop and launch new projects.
The Latvian Prime Minister also expressed his concerns about the impact of devaluation of the Belarusian ruble on the Latvian economy and approached the Belarusian side by asking to avoid discriminating import measures which have adverse effects on the exports of Latvian products.
The officials discussed the situation with regard to facilitated border crossing for border area residents and improved performance and efficiency of border crossing points. The sides shared the view that it is necessary to coordinate the positions of both countries and to develop concrete cooperation projects.
