On Wednesday, December 17, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, and Arūnas Valinskas, Speaker of the Parliament of the Republic of Lithuania (the Seimas), discussed the current economic situation of Latvia and Lithuania.
The Prime Minister informed about the economic stabilisation programme of Latvia, which has been recently approved by the Parliament of the Republic of Latvia (the Saeima), and is aimed at preventing the recession of economic activity, at stabilising the financial system and reconstructing the Latvian economy. The officials also exchanged the experience of both countries in the adoption of crisis prevention programs.
I.Godmanis emphasised that Lithuania is one of the Latvia’s most important economic and export partners. Latvia is interested in the capability of the Baltic States in dealing with the problems caused by the economic recession and maintaining the stability of the economic development.
A.Valinskas stressed that Latvia’s experience in overcoming the economic crisis is important to the Lithuanian Parliament and the Government for preparing the draft state budget of 2009.
A.Valinskas paid an official visit to Latvia upon the invitation by Gundars Daudze, Speaker of the Latvian Parliament.
