On December 11 to 12, a meeting of the European Council will take place in Brussels, and Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, and Māris Riekstiņš, Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia, will take part in it as representatives of Latvia.
The focus of the current meeting of the heads of the states and governments of the European Union will be the further procedure related to the Lisbon Treaty, the economic and financial situation – joint measures aimed at European economic recovery, as well as the climate and energy package.
In addition to those substantial issues, during the meeting its participants will be introduced to the energy security package proposed by the European Commission. The representatives of the European Commission will present a report on the implementation of European security strategy. But France, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, will present a draft declaration for strengthening the European security and defence policy.
The European Council’s agenda:
December 11, at 3:30 p.m., the first working session of the European Council will start, in which Minister for Foreign Affairs Māris Riekstiņš will represent Latvia.
Ivars Godmanis will arrive in Brussels in the evening of December 11 and will participate in working dinner that will take place after the first working session. At 10:30 p.m., Ivars Godmanis will participate in a press conference.
On December 12, at 10:00 a.m., I. Godmanis will participate in the second working session of the European Council during which the conclusions of the European Council will be approved.
