On Wednesday, October 29, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Michael Chertoff, Secretary of Homeland Security of the United States of America. During the meeting, M. Chertoff affirmed that Latvia has successfully concluded talks on joining the US Visa Waiver Program. The citizens of Latvia will be able to travel to the USA for business and tourism without a visa from November 17 this year.
During the meeting, I.Godmanis highlighted that introduction of the visa-free travel regime between the countries has a practical and symbolic significance. He expressed his confidence that further on the contacts between the people in Latvia and the USA can develop more rapidly.
In the course of negotiations, the officials also discussed the issues of global crisis and the importance of international initiatives in reducing the impacts of the crisis. Furthermore, Prime Minister I. Godmanis informed about the economic stabilisation measures in Latvia.
