On October 30–31, in Rīga, the international conference “Public International Treaty Law: Theory and Practice” will take place and focus on current issues of practical application of international treaties. The Conference will be opened by an address of the Minister for Justice of the Republic of Latvia Gaidis Bērziņš.
The Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis highlights that “this conference embodies an educational objective. The international treaties are a cornerstone for modern international relations. Each of them in a way helps to achieve the basic objective of international law, as proper understanding and application of international treaties have significance for raising the prestige of a country, as well as for enhancing its role in international diplomatic relations”.
The objective of the Conference is to make investment environment of Latvia more attractive to foreign investors. The international investment protection law is based on bilateral and multilateral treaties. A proper and precise application of those treaties is a precondition for developing foreign investors’ confidence in the readiness and capacity of a country to receive and protect foreign investments.
The Conference will also provide an opportunity to field specialists in Latvia to develop their theoretical knowledge, learn about foreign experience with regard to issues of international public treaties, thus building the legal capacity of public administration and generating new ideas for developing a new legislative basis for regulating international public relations of Latvia.
The speakers in the Conference will be internationally known foreign scholars and legal practitioners – Anthony I.Aust, Ulf Linderfalk, Andrew B.Loewenstein, and Chief of the Treaty Section of the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs Annebeth Rosenboom, as well as other public law specialists.
The Conference is organised by the State Chancellery of the Republic of Latvia in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Justice and Ventspils Free Port Authority and supported by Rīga International Airport and law office of „Kļaviņš & Slaidiņš LAWIN”.
