Today, on September 12, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Alexander Veshniakov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Russian Federation to Latvia, upon Ambassador’s initiative.
During the meeting A. Vechniakov informed about Russia’s position in relation to Georgia. Latvian Prime Minister I. Godmanis maintained that the most important task is the implementation of the six-point agreement, as well as of the agreements reached between the European Union and Russia on September 8; the Prime Minister emphasised the necessity of territorial integrity of Georgia, international negotiations on the possible security and stability solutions and on return of refugees to the conflict areas.
The Prime Minister and the Russian Ambassador also discussed the development of bilateral relations of Latvia and Russia. The sides confirmed that the expected bilateral high-level visits to Russia, meetings of the Intergovernmental Commission and meetings of industry experts are still on the agenda of bilateral relations.
I. Godmanis and A. Vechniakov noted that it is necessary to further work on the intergovernmental agreements of Latvia and Russia being in the process of drafting.
