Following the escalation of a military conflict in the region of Georgia, South Ossetia, an increasing intensity of clashes and the number of civilian casualties, and also the attacks of Russia’s armed forces within the last 12 hours on the Georgian territory which lies outside the conflict zone, Foreign Minister Maris Riekstins, on behalf of the Republic of Latvia has expressed the condemnation of these acts by the Russian Federation.
“The international community should adequately assess the events in South Ossetia, and I am of the opinion that this calls for a coordinated and operative action at all formats – those of EU, NATO, EDSO and UN, applying all the opportunities of the governmental and non-governmental sector for the facilitation and stabilizing of the dialogue. I have instructed the NATO Permanent Representative of Latvia to address the Secretary General with a request to summon in the nearest future the session of the NATO Permanent Council in order to assess the impact of this conflict upon the Alliance and upon the security interests of its member countries. In response to the repeated appeals by the Georgian side to revert to negotiations in order to reduce the tension and to resolve the conflict, I am calling upon the Russian side to cease all military action, which could even more destabilise the situation in the region,” indicates the Foreign Minister.
With regard to the instable situation in Georgia, the Foreign Minister calls upon individuals to give a careful consideration to the circumstances and a rational need of traveling to Georgia.
