Today, on June 4, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Igor Shuvalov, First Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Russian Federation. I.Shuvalov visited Latvia in his capacity as head of the Russian delegation for the Summit of the Council of the Baltic Sea States.
During the discussions, the Prime Minister stressed the necessity to further the process of finalising ratification of bilateral agreements and assigned priorities to agreements on the avoidance of double taxation on income, the cooperation in tourism and combating organised crime. I.Godmanis also emphasised the necessity of finding solutions for increasing transit capacity on the border crossing points of Latvia and Russia. The Prime Minister also appealed to Russia to use the transit potential of Latvia.
Igor Shuvalov showed his interest in furthering development of relations with Latvia. The parties positively assessed the work of the Latvian-Russian Intergovernmental Committee and agreed on the necessity to proceed with the work of this Committee.
During the course of the discussions, the officials exchanged views on several issues related to energy, including the development of energy infrastructure particularly in the area of electric energy. The officials also discussed the course of negotiations regarding Russia’s accession to the World Trade Organization.
