Today, on May 26, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Raul Chilachava, Ambassador of the Republic of Ukraine to Latvia.
The Prime Minister and the Ukrainian Ambassador discussed economic cooperation of both countries and opportunities for its development, establishing new cooperation mechanisms at the level of business confederations.
The officials emphasised the importance, in terms of strengthening cooperation, of the upcoming visit of Valdis Zatlers, President of the Republic of Latvia, to Ukraine in June, and they shared the view that the visit must become a significant impulse to further economic cooperation between both countries. The Ambassador informed that at the time of the visit, a business forum will also take place with participation of considerable number of Latvian and Ukrainian business representatives.
The Prime Minister expressed his support for establishing a business cooperation council of Latvia and Ukraine which objective would be enhancement of economic relations between both countries.
During the meeting, the Ambassador noted the increasing contacts between people of Latvia and Ukraine, particularly highlighting the relations of Latvia and Ukraine at the local government level, mentioning active cooperation of Liepāja, Ventpils, Jelgava and Daugavpils with cities in Ukraine.
In the course of discussions, the Ambassador also made a special note on transit development perspectives in the area of cargo transportation, as well as appealed to Latvian business representatives to involve in implementation of several infrastructure projects in Ukraine.
