Today, on February 21, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Duray Polat, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Turkey to Latvia, during his introductory visit.
The Turkish Ambassador expressed congratulations to Ivars Godmanis on his new post and expressed contentment with the successful cooperation between Latvia and Turkey, and on behalf of the Prime Minister of Turkey invited the Head of the Latvian Government to visit Turkey.
Ivars Godmanis acknowledged the cooperation between both countries and affirmed the assistance of Latvia to Turkey’s integration into the European Union. The Ambassador informed about the process of negotiations on Turkey’s accession to the EU and the political issues to be addressed. Ivars Godmanis and Duray Polat discussed the Kosovo issue, further development of the situation in the region and stressed the similar position of Latvia and Turkey on this subject matter.
The Ambassador informed about interest of Turkish businesses in participating in the infrastructure projects in Latvia and about the plans to promote Turkish investments in the eastern regions of Latvia, for example, in Latgale.
The Prime Minister affirmed his interest in learning more about Turkey’s economic and fiscal policy, the rapid and successful growth of its tourism industry.
The focus of the meeting was on energy issues, fight against terrorism, and situation in the Middle East.
