Today, on February 20, Ivars Godmanis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Christian Verdonck, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Belgium to Latvia, during his introductory visit.
The Latvian Prime Minister and the Belgian Ambassador discussed topical issues of both countries. Ivars Godmanis informed about the development of the Latvian economy, Government’s commitment to stabilise the national economy and about the future plans to introduce the euro. The Belgian Ambassador emphasised the importance of stability in order to ensure accession to the single currency system of the European Union.
The Head of the Latvian Government informed about the plans to foster balanced development of all regions of the country by using EU Structural Funds, and pointed out the impediments for this aim – the uneven density of population and small number of residents in some areas.
The Prime Minister and the Belgian Ambassador discussed social issues, tax policy, development of the banking sector, attraction of investments and matters related to logistics and transport infrastructure.
The sides also discussed the ratification process of the Lisbon Treaty of the European Union. Christian Verdonck informed about support of the leading Belgian parties and popular support to the ratification of the Lisbon Treaty. The Prime Minister and the Belgian Ambassador exchanged views on the Kosovo issue and other international matters.
