Yesterday, on October 29, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, participated in the meeting of the Heads of Government of the Baltic States and Nordic countries in Oslo (Norway), held before the annual session of the Nordic Council.
The Prime Ministers discussed issues related to the changes in the world climate and their impact on Europe and its Nordic region. Special attention was devoted to the development of such technologies which would reduce CO2 emissions.
The Prime Ministers shared the view that joint actions of region’s countries and the European Union (EU) are required, and an important pre-requisite for success would be ability of the EU to convince such countries as China, India, Brazil and Russia of the necessity to reduce their CO2 emissions.
The Heads of Governments emphasised that the EU, if acting alone, would not succeed in addressing the problems of global warming and climate changes. Furthermore, special attention is needed for developing a balanced approach taking into account all the economic aspects and competitiveness of individual countries and the whole EU on the global market.
A number of significant challenges of region’s countries and the EU should be discussed in 2009 when the international U.N. conference on climate changes is planned in Denmark. This conference will require hard work on its preparation in order to propose global solutions which are acceptable for all countries of the world.
Another focus of the meeting was international issues related to Afghanistan, Kosovo, the Neighbourhood Policy, as well as EU’s relations with Russia.
Today the Latvian Prime Minister will start his working visit in the United States of America.
