In the period of October 31-November 1 this year, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, will pay a short working visit to the United States of America (USA). This visit was already planned early in 2007 by emphasising the 85th anniversary since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Latvia and USA.
The Prime Minister will meet U.S. Vice-President Richard B. Cheney, Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff; meetings are also planned in the Treasury, the Department of Energy and in other governmental and non-governmental institutions of the United States.
The aim of this visit is to further develop open political dialogue with the United States, to strengthen current cooperation and to seek new opportunities for more extensive cooperation.
During the visit Aigars Kalvītis will again speak with the U.S. partners about Latvia’s accession to the U.S. visa-free programme as soon as possible. It is also planned to address issues related to the security policy, international matters and cooperation of Latvia and the USA in such areas as economy, energy and finances.
