Today, on November 22, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Ferenc Gyurcsány, Prime Minister of the Republic of Hungary, during his working visit to Latvia.
The Latvian Prime Minister acknowledged the current bilateral dialogue which is beneficial for both countries in such areas as culture, education, defence, justice and transportation. Both officials shared the view that trade and economic relations of both countries has a great development potential.
The Hungarian Prime Minister acknowledged success of Hungarian companies with regard to conclusion of the Cooperation Agreement with Latvia on supplies of trolleybuses and expressed his hope that similar agreements would be concluded in future. Aigars Kalvītis noted that the opening of the Hungarian Embassy in Rīga will certainly foster cooperation and encourage development of relations and contacts between the countries.
Both Prime Ministers discussed a number of international issues. One of them was the Reform Treaty of the European Union which is expected to be signed in some weeks’ time in Lisbon. The officials also addressed future challenges of Europe and concluded that the positions of Hungary and Latvia are very favourable. The Prime Minister of Hungary expressed a proposal to develop closer cooperation with the EU bodies in order to protect mutual interests in Brussels.
The Prime Ministers addressed the Kosovo issue and shared the view that this issue requires coordinated and sound approach in order to reach the needed agreements.
Another focus of the meeting was on relations with Russia and opportunities for their improvement in such areas as culture, science, trade and energy.
Prime Minister Aigars Kalvītis and Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány participated in the signing ceremony of the Cooperation Agreement of the Republic of Latvia and the Republic of Hungary – Agreement between the Government of the Republic of Latvia and the Government of the Republic of Hungary on reciprocal representation in diplomatic and consular representations with regard to issue of visas and collection of biometric data.
The signing ceremony was followed by a press conference of both Prime Ministers at which they answered questions of journalists.
