Today, on November 1, in Washington, during the working visit to the United States of America (USA), Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Deputy Secretary of the U.S. Treasury Robert M. Kimmit.
The Prime Minister informed about the development of the Latvian economy and finance sector and pointed out to the increasing participation of U.S. capital both in the finance sector and in investment projects.
Aigars Kalvītis also informed about a number of measures taken in the Latvian finance sector in order to fight laundering of illegal proceeds; this is an area in which the Government has performed great amount of work by developing continuous dialogue with banks, supervisory bodies, law enforcement institution and international partners. This work has resulted in a high level of transparency of financial transactions.
The Prime Minister emphasised: “Systematic and purposeful work of the Government with regard to the development of the finance and banking sector shows our interest in strengthening Latvia’s position as a financial centre and out interest in close cooperation with the U.S. Government and partners in order to ensure further development.”
The Latvian Government and the Financial and Capital Market Commission deem it necessary to develop dialogue not only with the Ministry of Finance of the United States but also with individual regulators of the finance sector in the States. To this end, an important step will be signing of the cooperation memorandum tomorrow between the Financial and Capital Market Commission and the New York regulator.
