On May 30, the USA announced that Robert Zoellick is nominated for the post of the President of the World Bank. R. Zoellick has filled an office of the US Deputy Secretary of the State, as well as the US Trade Representative. During discharge of duties of the US Trade Representative he has made significant contributions to commencement of Doha Development Round of the World Trade Organization negotiations. Moreover, Zoellick has discharged functions of the US Deputy Commissioner at the World Bank during significant time period from 1989-1992.
The Prime Minister approves nomination of a candidacy of R. Zoellick to the post of the President of the World Bank, his noteworthy work experience in the US Government, as well as in the area of promotion of international economics and global development and considers that his previous experience and leadership abilities will be good grounds for attaining the goals of this organization.
In April, 2005, R.Zoellick while discharging functions of the US Deputy Secretary of the State paid a visit to Latvia and during the visit met the President, V.Vīķe-Freiberga, the Prime Minister, Aigars Kalvītis and the Minister for Foreign Affairs, A.Pabriks. On August 8, 2005, during his visit in Washington the Prime Minister, Aigars Kalvītis met R.Zoellick. During both visits, significant political and economic issues were discussed.
