Today, during his working visit to Russia, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Alexei Miller, President of company Gazprom.
During the discussion Alexei Miller informed Aigars Kalvītis about the latest development in the Russian Federation which have promoted transition of Russia’s energy sector to operation according to the market economy principles.
The Latvian Prime Minister and the President of Gazprom discussed cooperation of the European Union (EU) and Russia in energy matters. Aigars Kalvītis stressed that Latvia and the EU are interested in stability and predictability.
Aigars Kalvītis acknowledged current cooperation of Latvijas Gāze and Gazprom. The Prime Minister raised the question about opportunities to conclude medium-term gas supply agreements. This would ensure higher predictability of potential increases in prices of gas and other energy resources.
Aigars Kalvītis and Alexei Miller also discussed opportunities to develop a new gas storage facility in Latvia. The President of Gazprom acknowledged current cooperation with regard to Inčukalns gas storage facilities operating as a regional gas delivery centre for the Baltics and western regions of Russia. In view of the seasonal character of the gas market, Gazprom showed interest in developing additional gas storage facilities in Latvia.
Today Prime Minister Aigars Kalvītis is meeting Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, German Gref, Russian Economic Development and Trade Minister, and Artur Chilingarov, Vice-Speaker of the State Duma.
The Prime Minister will also participate in a round-table discussion together with the President of the Russian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Jevgeni Primakov.
