On Monday, March 26, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, started his visit to Russia and met His Holiness Alexy II, Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia.
Patriarch Alexy II highly acknowledged his visit to Latvia last year when he was warmly welcomed, and he still has bright memories about the occasion.
Patriarch Alexy II and Aigars Kalvītis discussed the role of the church in the society and those events during the reign of the Soviet Union which destroyed all spiritual values, including also religious values. The Patriarch acknowledged efforts taken in Latvia and Russia to renovate religious buildings showing public awareness about spiritual values.
Aigars Kalvītis and Alexy II also addressed the most important issues of bilateral relations of Latvia and Russia. The Latvian Prime Minister informed the Patriarch about the latest developments in relations of Latvia and Russia since the visit of the Patriarch to Latvia in May 2006, and expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to meet His Holiness Alexy II.
Alexy II highly acknowledged the fact that the Latvian Prime Minister started his working visit to Russia by a visit to the Danilov Monastery and a meeting with the Patriarch. Alexy II expressed his hope that this meeting would have positive impact on the further visit of Aigars Kalvītis to Russia.
After the meeting with Patriarch Alexy II the Prime Minister visited the Latvian Embassy in Russia and met Latvian entrepreneurs actively operating in Russia.
Tomorrow, on March 27, the Prime Minister of Latvia will meet the Prime Minister of Russia. They will sign the Border Treaty between the Russian Federation and the Republic of Latvia and held a joint press briefing.
During the visit the Latvian Prime Minister will also meet Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation, other high officials, representatives of the Russian industrial sector and businesses.
