Today, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Ignacio Sanchez Galan, CEO of the Spanish company IBERDROLA.
Aigars Kalvītis informed the representatives of this Spanish company about the development of the energy sector in Latvia and in the Baltic region. The Prime Minister emphasised that it is necessary to develop a balanced energy policy based both on safety of supplies and alternative sources and on balancing various types of energy production.
The Head of the Latvian Government admitted that it needed to focus on use of renewable energy in Latvia, and the Latvian energy policy should be linked to the relevant developments and trends in Estonia and Lithuania.
At the end of the meeting the sides addressed issues related to the reconstruction of TEC-2 and compliance with the schedules set previously. Aigars Kalvītis stressed that during next decade the energy sector will acquire special importance in view of the fact that some solutions will be required upon closing down Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant.
