Today, November 27, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, held a meeting with Richard Lugar, Senator of the United States of America.
U.S. Senator Richard Lugar expressed his pleasure for the opportunity to visit Latvia and meet the Head of its Government. The Senator highly acknowledged Latvia’s achievement during last 15 years in developing its democracy, economy, fighting unemployment, attracting investment from the EU and the United States, as well as forming a stable coalition government upon the recent elections in Latvia.
Richard Lugar confirmed close and friendly relations of Latvia and the United States and expressed commitment to further develop and strengthen bilateral contacts
Prime Minister Aigars Kalvītis informed the Senator about the successful development of the Latvian economy which is most rapidly growing economy in the EU with an anticipated growth of the GDP by 11% this year.
Aigars Kalvītis expressed gratitude for support of the United States to Latvia. The Prime Minister noted that upon attaining Latvia’s strategic aims – EU and NATO membership – the Government faces have many challenges to be addressed in order to enhance the living standard, improve transport infrastructure, strengthen security and develop new power supply networks.
Aigars Kalvītis highly acknowledged close cooperation with the United States which has been strongly fostered by Catherine Todd Bailey, U.S. Ambassador to Latvia. The achievements include seminars on investment opportunities in Latvia, attraction of U.S. investors in the banking sector, development of successful cooperation in strengthening port security and in many other fields.
The Latvian Prime Minister expressed his hope that the United States would abolish its visa regime for Latvia's citizens travelling to the United States which would also promote closer and more extensive relations of both countries and their people.
