Today, November 16, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Jarosław Kaczyński, Prime Minister of Poland, during his working visit to Poland with the aim of meeting cooperation partners in the region.
The Prime Minister of Poland thanked Aigars Kalvītis for coming to Poland on a working visit and thus strengthening the relations of Poland and Latvia.
Recently, the cooperation of the Baltic States and Poland has become more active, which can be seen from the recent meeting of the Presidents of the four countries; furthermore, on December 8 in Vilnius a meeting of all four Prime Ministers will take place.
During the meeting both Heads of Government discussed the Neighbourhood Policy of the European Union (EU). They stressed that mutual coordination of positions is necessary and that joint Neighbourhood Policy activities should be performed at the EU level.
The Prime Minister of Poland informed Aigars Kalvītis about the results of his previous day’s visit to Kiev.
Both Heads of Government discussed energy issues. It is particularly important to find a possibility to connect the energy network of the Baltic States to the EU network, which will be facilitated by the forthcoming signing of a statement of intentions between Poland and Lithuania. Also discussed was the issue of gas supplies and possibilities of creating gas reserves for the region by using Latvia’s underground gas storage facilities and thus creating strategic reserves. Possibilities of building liquefied gas terminals in the Baltic region were also discussed.
At the end of the meeting both Heads of Government discussed the topical issues of the EU and Russia connected with preparations for the next week’s EU-Russia summit.
The Prime Minister of Poland expressed willingness to actively continue the dialogue with Latvia.
