Today, September 19, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Chen Ivri, the new Ambassador of Israel to Latvia, who paid the Prime Minister an introductory visit.
The Prime Minister congratulated the Ambassador on the new position and hoped that the bilateral relations of Latvia and Israel will continue to develop.
Aigars Kalvītis expressed satisfaction with the friendly relations of Latvia and Israel, the active political dialogue, and stressed Latvia’s interest to promote economic cooperation.
Among possible areas of closer cooperation the Prime Minister mentioned information technologies as well as tourism; he positively viewed the starting of direct flights between Rīga and Tel Aviv.
The Prime Minister said that Israel is Latvia’s most important partner in the Middle East, and that already for more than a decade a Latvian embassy is operating in Israel.
Aigars Kalvītis stressed that work needs to continue in developing the legal basis for cooperation, which would allow widening and diversifying cooperation areas. The Prime Minister positively assessed cooperation of Latvia and Israel in the framework of international organizations and expressed interest to cooperate in European Union programmes and projects, particularly in development cooperation policy.
