Today, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Dr. Margaret Chan, candidate of the People’s Republic of China to the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO).
Margaret Chan informed the Prime Minister on the decision of the Government of China to nominate her as the candidate to the position of Director-General of the World Health Organization and asked for Latvia’s support.
The candidate introduced Aigars Kalvītis with her previous work in health care. Dr. Chan listed the main areas of activity of the WHO which in her opinion require active work. Most notably, practical measures must be taken to eliminate bureaucracy, which impedes achievement of positive results in dealing with global health care issues.
The Prime Minister positively assessed the work of Dr. Margaret Chan and stressed that the Government of Latvia will carefully assess all candidates to the position of Director-General of the WHO and make its decision after September 5, when all official candidates will be known to the high position of head of the WHO.
