Today, July 24, continuing his official visit to Slovenia, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met Dimitrij Rupel, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia. During the meeting A. Kalvītis positively assessed cooperation with Slovenia during its OSCE presidency. Both officials shared the view that already in 2008 Slovenia will have to assume new, internationally important duties, when it will hold the European Union (EU) presidency.
A. Kalvītis noted that the year 2008 for the EU will be very important politically, as new significant decisions will have to be made on future development of the Union. “Latvia developed a close and pragmatic cooperation with Slovenia in dealing with such important issues as the Financial Perspective and the Service Directive. From our side we hope to expand this cooperation, especially thinking about Slovenia’s presidency”, said A. Kalvītis.
Continuing their conversation, Aigars Kalvītis and Dimitrij Rupel discussed topical international issues – situation in the Middle East and the recent G8 meeting. Significant attention was paid to the situation in the Balkans, particularly the future status of Kosovo. At the end of the meeting A. Kalvītis invited considering joint projects of Latvia and Slovenia that could be implemented in Balkan countries, in Ukraine, Moldova and countries of South Caucasus.
