Aigars Kalvītis meets Japanese businessmen

Today, June 29, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, met a delegation of Japanese businessmen – eight representatives of the Japan Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Russia, who have come to learn about opportunities for transit and logistics offered by Latvia.

During the meeting the Prime Minister informed on his recent visit to Japan, meeting with Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, as well as the official inauguration of the Embassy of Latvia in Japan. Aigars Kalvītis underscored the advantageous geopolitical location of Latvia and transport route connections with Russia and the European Union.

The Prime Minister noted the positive trends in relations between Latvia and Russia, which can be seen from the recent meetings with Russia’s Prime Minister Mikhail Fradkov and President Vladimir Putin. Aigars Kalvītis stressed that such positive developments will promote new business opportunities also for Japanese companies in this region.

The Prime Minister expressed interest in involving Japan in the New Silk Road project, which is an important priority of Latvia and which is aimed at a establishing a fast and efficient Asia - Europe rail route linking the Far East with Europe through Kazakhstan, Russia and Latvia.

The Japanese side emphasized the booming trade between Japan and Russia and noted that Latvia has a huge potential as a provider of transport and logistics services involved in the Japanese-Russian business relations. The Japanese delegation noted also other opportunities for cooperation, especially in the area of information technologies.
