During his working visit to Japan, Aigars Kalvītis, Prime Minister of the Republic of Latvia, today in Tokyo met Junichiro Koizumi, Prime Minister of Japan. During the meeting Aigars Kalvītis informed the Japanese Prime Minister about opening of the Embassy of Latvia in Tokyo and the main directions of action of the Latvian government which it considers to be most important for developing diverse and extensive cooperation with Japan. Thinking about possibilities for economic growth of our country and actively participating in the European Union and NATO, it is important for Latvia to develop bilateral cooperation with Japan, said Aigars Kalvītis. The Prime Minister of Japan positively viewed the opening of the Embassy of Latvia and thanked Latvia for its policy in the context of the United Nations reform by supporting the proposal of Japan, Brazil, Germany and India on including them in the Security Council. Junichiro Koizumi said that it is very important to develop bilateral relations, and that Japan would like to strengthen the cooperation of both countries also within the framework of international organizations. Aigars Kalvītis noted that the economic development of Latvia is one of the fastest in Europe, which is evidence of stability of investment environment and the country in general and guarantees additional safety for investors and cooperation partners. The dynamics of development is one of the most important factors witnessing Latvias readiness for membership of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The Prime Minister asked Japan to politically support Latvias membership to this organization. The Prime Minister of Japan suggested to Aigars Kalvītis to think about a campaign for promoting the image of Latvia and about the many potential opportunities provided by Latvia, in order to attract the attention of the tourism industry of Japan. At the end of the meeting Aigars Kalvītis handed to Mr. Koizumi an official invitation letter inviting the Prime Minister of Japan to visit Latvia.
